Do retainers stretch over time?

I have been wearing retainers after invisalign for the last year now every single night of the week, but have since noticed that a gap is returning to my front teeth. I have since ordered new retainer and it is pretty tight, but I am happy I did so to stop them from moving back. I presume my retainer must have stretched or something. Does this normally happen?
