Will braces damage the crowns on my front teeth?

September 14th, 2009
Q.
I have always been a bit unhappy with the four crowns I have at the front of my mouth, and am going to have braces. Mr orthodontist has said this is okay, but I am concerned that one of the bridges may break or something. Is there any chance of this happening?

Is it not enough to give my teeth excellent dental cleaning at home?

September 11th, 2009
Q.
If you have a good teeth cleaning routine, including cleaning your teeth with toothpaste and toothbrush, mouthwash and using floss, is there any real need to actually go to the dentist. Should they not be in a good condition anyway if I am taking care of them?

How long will a crown typically last?

September 10th, 2009
Q.
I got a crown for one of my teeth when it got broken off. I had to get the whole tooth removed through surgery. This was around two years ago. When I go to the dentist she says the crown is holding up well, which makes me worry about how long it will actually last. She did mention the option of an implant when we first discussed what I could do, but I chose a crown becuase it was cheaper. How long do crowns typically last?

Why does my child constantly require cavity treatment?

September 9th, 2009
Q.
Hi Dr Kumar, I always make sure my 9 year old child brushes his teeth day and night, and I also limit the amount of sweets he eats. None the less, whenever I take him for his six-month check up, he always seems to need treatment for cavities and tooth decay. Is there an underlying problem, or is there something more I could do to improve my child’s dental hygiene?

Do lower dentures fit less well than upper dentures?

September 9th, 2009
Q.
I currently wear complete upper dentures and they fit fine, after an initial time of uncomfortableness. However, my bottom teeth are not in particularly good condition either, but I would rather not get dentures for them as I have heard they fit less well than upper dentures. Are there any other options available, or am I hearing wrong in the first place?

Is using toothpaste and a toothbrush twice a day not enough?

September 9th, 2009
Q.
When I go to the supermarket I see so many different things to clean teeth (toothbursh, mouthwash, floss and others). Is it not just enough to clean your teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste two times a day?

My tooth crumbled when my braces were removed. Why?

September 7th, 2009
Q.
When I had my fixed braces taken off, for some reason one of my teeth at the side of my mouth crumbled away, with the root and remaining bone still intact. Why did this happen and what should I do?
